August Artist of the Month

Written by:
paulr

Utrecht’s Artist of the Month for August is Gentry Gough Gygi.  Here is a bit from her bio:

***

Gentry Gough Gygi began taking watercolor classes from Harold Petersen in 1993.  While at Highland High she took art from Pat Eddington, and was the Sterling Scholar in Art in 1996.  She has taken pottery from Mark Petersen and has tried her hand at charcoal, pastels, and acrylic.  However, her true love is painting with watercolor.  Attending her art class with her family and learning from “Pete”, is a highlight of her week.  She enjoys painting scenes from places she has visited or that have significance in her life.  She enjoys her life as a wife and mother of three young children.  In her spare time she loves to garden, sew, hike, and create photo books.

Sugarhouse Stroll

Written by:

Wow!  Did we have a lot of fun last night.

Friday May 8 was the Sugarhouse Stroll where local businesses stayed open late to host events and art showings.  The event was well attended and the weather was perfect.  Folks paraded from shop to shop to view the work of local artists, consume tasty treats, and I even saw a few folks sampling some wine (sshhh).

Here at Utrecht we showed the artwork of some of our talented staff members and hosted some painting events for those folks who came to visit.  We had tables set up complete with paints, brushes, and canvases for budding artists to test their skills in painting a masterpiece to take home with them.  We were amazed at what some first-timers produced.  (I think some of them were amazed as well!)

We also dedicated a large portion of our floor space to a giant canvas and encouraged our visitors to add their artisitic touch by squirting, spraying, dripping, and dribbling various colors of paint in the style of Jackson Pollock.  Some people were shy and dripped a little paint, some were bold and went at it with full gusto!  It was fun to see how everyone who painted put so much thought into their strokes.  The funniest part was when a parent let his little girl squirt the paint while he held her above the canvas and moved her around like a paint brush.

All in all, everyone had a blast.  We can’t wait to do it again next year!  Here are a few pictures:
